Abstract

Between 2017 and 2018 the concentrations of uranium in drinking water in the Huanuhuanu district were above
what was established in the current national regulations, which is why actions were taken that caused a supply
problem for the population, which added to situations of fear of radiation, caused many residents to migrate out
of the district due to fear of intoxication or of procreating children with malformations due to the consumption of
this contaminated water affecting the socio-economic activities of the area. Although authorities and specialists
in public health indicated that this water should not be used, a more detailed analysis allowed demonstrating
that the sanitary regulations have not been adequately implemented based on the recommendations of the
World Health Organization and it is concluded that the reported values do not represent a health risk for the
population.
