The dental color is matched up with color guides to determine a reference that allows its description and communication in clinical procedures where tooth-colored materials are used. OBJECTIVE: To establish the reliability of a new system for registration and analysis of the dental color using digitized images, a photographic cubicle with illumination ad hoc and a software of photographic edition, with the color guide Vitapan 3D Master. METHODS: The first 5 bills of each level of clarity of the guide Vitapan 3D-M were photographed with a digital camera at 5x, in 6 successive times each a, without moving away the bead and moving away the bead among picture and picture, using an illuminated photographic cubicle with fluorescent daylight (2350lm, IRC >95, 5400°K); registered in format TIFF, adapted in Adobe Photoshop 7.0, to be analyzed by the histogram of the color of the system CIELab that admits this software. RESULTS: The error margins to the Continuum takeovers is of 1.52 to 3.76 3.76, and discontinuous it becomes of 1.50 to 3.78. Does it not find significant differences to the comparing both methods in L* levels (Wilcoxo p≥0.138), Whitenig (Wilcoxo p≥0.116), neither ∆E superior to 0.84. CONCLUSION: The similarity in the error margin grants reliability to the method; The validity of the system for his concordance in the analysis CIELab of the digital images of the color beads, allows to suggest it as a reliable instrument of high reproducibility in order to the dental color's objective quantification in vitro, to be employee in the teaching and investigation of the dental color and his sequels.
