Abstract

The Viking mission at the 70’s showed the Martian soil to have three important characteristics: absence of life, absence of organic material and the presence of one or more highly reactive oxidants. This conclusion was made due to four experiments on board of Viking spacecraft, one of whom was named Labeled Release Experiment (LR). In this experiment gas evolution was monitored after the addition of nutrients 14C-labeled to Martian soils. The present work summarizes the results found by the Viking and compares these data with others made in terrestrial Mars-like soils.
